On January 12, 2012 at the WCI Emissions Trading Program Update meeting in San Francisco California, the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) unveiled their strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote a clean energy economy.

Toward a North American Carbon Market: Cap-and-Trade System for GHG Emission Allowances

The cap-and-trade system gives companies flexibility in planning their short, medium and long term investments. It lets companies buy emission allowances on the market until they are ready to bring their equipment up to date. Companies that have reduced their GHG emissions below the regulatory requirement could find themselves with an allocation of emission units and by selling those excess units, they could either recover part of their investments or use the proceeds to engage in further optimization.

New Web-Based Map Tracks Marine Dead Zones Worldwide

New research by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) identifies more than 530 low-oxygen “dead zones” and an additional 228 sites worldwide exhibiting signs of marine “eutrophication.” Eutrophication occurs when water bodies are over-fertilized by nutrients that are washed into surface waters from farms and urban areas.

Jackson and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne today traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to announce a cooperative agreement to develop and adapt hydraulic hybrid technology for the light duty auto market. The goal of this partnership is to design a Chrysler minivan as a demonstration vehicle, using EPA’s own patented technology.

Massachusetts Announces Clean Energy and Climate Plan

Massachusetts announced its Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2020: it lays out how the state will achieve its targets under its Global Warming Solutions Act of 2008.

The law commits the state to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 25% below 1990 levels by 2020, and 80% by 2050.

Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Ian Bowles, said the plan won't require new regulations or costs for businesses and residents that go beyond what they'll receive in savings.

Europe To Exceed 20% Renewable Energy Goal by 2020

The European Union is on track to exceed its target of meeting 20% of its gross final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020, according to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

EWEA published its analysis of the 27 National Renewable Energy Action Plans, submitted  by the EU Member States to the European Commission.
