How Long Does a Purge Project Take?

It is the age old question that has plagued IT crowds for many decades. Well, maybe not decades per se... And I guess the item that has plagued IT crowds is when they have to ask “Did you try turning it on and off again?” Nonetheless, this is the subject that can add some worry to an already swamped IT employee. The fear is that a purge project is a neverending project and that the initial purge of the years of data will take forever. This really isn’t the case.

So, no doubt (unless you have been on a desert island the last few months) you are familiar with the Ice Bucket Challenge.  It was started just this summer – the main social media side of it was started on Twitter by former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who has ALS.  The number of people who have taken up the challenge and “challenged” others has been growing exponentially since then.

Through my various adventures, I’ve discovered that both JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and World users haven’t been thinking about a data purge – over 60% said they have never purged or archived. I understand that the thought of a purge project can be daunting but by putting a purge project off, you’re running the risk of too much information which can hurt your system and business in the long run.
